I am a former high school coach and classroom teacher and I really enjoyed the challenges of working with my students. I left teaching and worked for a major corporation and then owned my own business. I decided to sit down one day about three years ago and write a science fiction story. I’ve loved science fiction my entire life and have read so many books from the great masters that have shaped my view of the world and cosmos. My wife urged me to give it a go and publish the books I had written; she felt I was a great story teller and that others might enjoy my rather over active imagination. The first book was Annihilation – love Conquers All. Before I knew it, five books had found their way on to my laptop. I allowed friends to read them and the response was overwhelming. I decided to publish them on Amazon Kindle. I have discovered a few things since.

I found out that there were thousands that enjoyed my books and bought all three of the first trilogy making all three books best sellers on Amazon. I also discovered that there were others who pointed out that I have a lot to learn about writing style, grammar, sentence structure and so many other things. I agree with them. I am a work in progress. However, my intent is to entertain and produce a story that keeps the reader turning pages. I write so that anyone can enjoy the story. I keep it clean so that parents won’t have to worry about their children reading my books.

I want science fiction fans, like myself, to stay up all night trying to finish the story. I write like I speak. I do recognize that I have some work ahead to become a more accomplished writer but the only way to grow is to continue writing. I have also discovered that I do have a passion to provide books for those that enjoy my stories. I do hope that I never get so caught up in style that I lose the ability to produce an entertaining story.

There, you’re warned. Now hold on to your seat and get into the seven science fiction series I’ve created. Have I got some stories for you.

Star Wars and Ugly Love rolled into one colossal Book.

A Forgotten Kitten

Many readers enjoy Star Wars-esque stories of conflict on faraway planets, while other readers tend to stick to epic romances. Few authors have managed to combine the two genres in such a seamless way as Jessica A. Kong has in her Sea-anan Saga. She has created a highly complex story with fully developed characters, and the themes explored here are inarguably adult, yet the reading level required is no more than eighth grade. A Forgotten Kitten zips along at just the right pace, allowing the reader to digest the complexity of the plot and interrelation between the characters without having to think too hard.

The story revolves around Sev, a young, handsome prince and member of a royal family who rises to become king of the Oceanan race. Sev is raised in the midst of a vicious family feud, but all seems worth it when his adoptive aunt gives birth to a beautiful little girl whom Sev falls instantly and irrevocably in love with. But when Sev’s planet collides with its own sun and collapses, he must bear the loss of his entire family, including his love as well as any memory of her.

Areo, the heroine of the story, is that little girl that Sev fell for during his childhood. She is a human-feline hybrid who has grown to hate the royal family that her soul mate hails from. She undergoes a destructive event and space travel episode similar to Sev’s, and it is not too long before she has settled her new planet and with her fellow half-bloods, created a strong, thriving society. When she is brutally attacked by Daehog, everyone in her empire is scattered throughout the universe. Where does she land but the planet that Sev is currently occupying.

What follows is a continually building conflict interlaced with one of the most fervently passionate love stories seen in these kinds of novels. Kong chooses not just to write about space travel, or war, or love, or family, or even racism; instead, she chooses to combine all of these classic literary themes into one amazing story. The result is a mysterious and ultimately deeply satisfying story that only leads to the craving for more from this gifted and astoundingly creative writer.

Reading should always be enjoyable, especially when reading escapist literature, and Kong has remembered this and accomplished it without sacrificing plot or characterization. The task of any science fiction writer is to take alien, unbelievable concepts and present them in a way that convinces the reader they are plausible in reality, and Kong has certainly hit the mark with her second novel in this delightfully mystifying series.

Kathleen Steed was born on September 12, 1953. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland with a B.S. Degree in Medical Technology. She worked in various laboratories for twenty-nine years then changed jobs from working in laboratories to regulating laboratories. She is a member of the United Methodist Church and was a Lay Speaker from 2007 to 2013. She lives in Maryland with her husband and a Jack Russell Terrier named Spanky. He has wrestled an Iranian soldier who tried to break into his hotel room in Tehran. He has had the paint completely stripped from his car as he drove across Saudi Arabia in a sandstorm. He has stood on the stage of a busy nightclub in Tokyo, singing “She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes” to an audience feeling no pain from the Sake they were drinking. He has been chased by a family of mongooses (yes, that is the correct spelling) on the idyllic Caribbean island of St. Croix. And that is just the beginning of his long list of worldly adventures.

As a recent retiree from a forty-year career as a professor of writing, he now lives in Southern California wine country with his wife, Kitty, and their two adorable rescue cats.
