Christmas in February

Last night I saw my grand daughter for the first time in a very long time.

Through the Holidays she and her siblings, along with her Mother and Step Father, were ill with the Flu.

She is three years old and is tall for her age. Loves to color and can write her name. I felt warm as we hugged greeting each other, and the smile on her face made me want to cry.

The old saying of absence makes the heart grow founder is very true. I remember being away from home in the service, and upon my return everything I had known seemed new and waiting to be re-explored.

Such is a relationship when seeing an old friend, or relative. It is like learning about that person all over again.

With my Granddaughter it was like that, except at her age she is full of energy and sitting down to talk was not easy as she was off coloring and doing what three year olds do.

I’m sure this summer we will have ample time to picnic, cook out, and play. But for now I will just cherish the moment and tuck it away in memory.

Excerpt from: The Time Takers

Suddenly, the cave was filled with a deafening roar. Everyone in the cave turned, grabbed their ears and looked to the left, where they saw an opening in the cave wall at the end of a short corridor. Something was filling the opening. Andy was stunned at what he saw. This was a nightmare that could only come from an overdose of bad drugs.
Everyone fled across the cave to the wall furthest from the opening. The Romans broke formation and ran with the others. The Roman Leader held his ground and Andy saw he was shocked and frightened out of his wits. It was easy to see why. Andy sprinted across the cave and moved into the short corridor leading to the opening where a giant head with rows of sharp teeth was being pushed further into the cave. He stopped twenty feet from the head, raised the bow and fired an arrow directly into the open mouth of the huge Allosaurus. The giant reptile screamed and jerked its head back out of the opening but not before Andy had notched another arrow and hit it between the eyes with an arrow that buried itself to the fletching. The giant’s roar was silenced as it straightened up and then fell backwards.

Andy put the bow over his shoulder and ran toward the entrance. He saw a large stone wheel on the right side of the opening designed to block the entrance and he ran behind it and tried to push it forward. The roars from outside the cave were getting louder…and numerous; everyone inside could hear that there were more of the nightmares that had stuck its head in the cave outside the opening. He pushed as hard as he could but the wheel was just too heavy to move. There was a channel cut into the floor for it to roll in; but it was just too massive to budge. The Roman Leader sprinted over and started pushing with Andy. They looked out of the opening as they struggled to move the stone wheel and saw ten of the giant carnivores were just outside the entrance surrounding the dead Allosaurus,. They appeared to be trying to determine what killed it. One of them looked at the cave opening and started moving toward it. Ten Samurai and five Vikings arrived at that moment and began pushing with Andy and the Roman. The wheel started moving and then rolled over the entrance just before the dinosaur arrived. The men gathered at the wheel felt it lean into the cave for a moment…and then fall back against the opening.

Role Models

There are many people I admire but few I have as role models. I’m picky in this matter and rightly we all should when it comes to people we place on any pedestal.

First and foremost as you may have guest is my father who is the example of fortitude and ingenuity. That man had a never say die attitude and his ability to create something out of nothing is legendary. 41 years ago this month the lord took him from us and truly I miss him and his words of wisdom which are ingrained into my heart, my mind, soul, and butt.

My Mother is second to no one…she is right there a long side my father as most respected and admired. She sacrificed her life to her children, gave birth to 13 kids, and loved and cared for each and every one of us no matter what. She is the star of loyalty, devotion, strength, and most of all Love. She was taking from us all too soon, 16 years ago next month.

My brothers without whom I would have never learned to be a smart ass.

My sisters without whom I would have never learned the skills of house conduct, and house hold chores.

Then there are my friends, without whom I would have no stories to hide from my children.

If you look back on your life as well, you will find many which you admired for one reason or another. As far as me and my walk only a handful I found as role models…someone who I can point to and say, follow this example. It is not because they achieved Worldly greatness. Rather, it was the way they conducted their lives. It was the way they treated others and Loved.

I am blessed to have known so many people in my life.

I’ve walked down many paths.

Some I wish I hadn’t.

Some of these I’ve chosen, and others I feel I was led.

If I listed all those who contributed to my life the list would go on forever.

But the list of role models would be short.

I hope that in some way I’m a role model to someone.

I hope that in someway I was able to give back what I’ve been given.

I hope too that you are a role model giving to someone a gift that they can hold within for a life time.
